Artist Mandy Cao’s paintings are beautiful and painful, calm and striking, completely surreal and yet very much relatable. I first saw Cao’s painting “Girl and Keeper”, which is the header for this post, a little while ago and immediately saved it and then moved on. But the image stuck with me. It’s sad, serene, familiar, and somewhat juvenile in its surrealism. Learning that Cao’s paintings are inspired by real stories explains the familiarity of each unreal setting and makes each emotion evoked by a painting just that much more powerful.
